Chronic Kidney Disease affects 14% of the US population with nearly 650,000 of them undergoing renal replacement therapies like dialysis and transplant. Chronic kidney disease dramatically increases a patient’s risk of cardiovascular disease decreasing quality of life and life expectancy.

Anna Mathew, Assistant professor in the Division of Nephrology at the University of Michigan explores the mechanism underlying the 15 to 30 times higher risk of cardiovascular disease in kidney patients compared to patients of the same age with normal kidney function. The Mathew Lab uses its expertise in metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics on clinical, animal and metabolic flux models to understand the patho-physiological mechanisms underlying this increased cardiovascular risk in kidney patients.
